What's on this page
How Queensland Magistrates Courts work for traffic matters
- Which court: your Notice to Appear names the Magistrates Court and the date and time. It is usually the court for the area where the offence is alleged to have happened.
- Court and registry: some smaller and remote courts sit in one place but are administered by a registry in a larger town. The registry is where documents are filed and enquiries are handled. Both are shown below where they differ.
- Sitting days: many regional and remote courts sit only on particular days or on circuit. Check the court calendar for your location on the Queensland Courts website.
- Law lists: Queensland Courts publishes law lists by location, which show which courtroom your matter is in.
- Videoconferencing: some courthouses list videoconferencing and remote witness facilities. Whether you can appear by video depends on the court and the stage of your matter.

Before your court date
What to bring
- Your Notice to Appear, and any bail paperwork or suspension notice.
- The police court brief (QP9), if you have it.
- Photo identification.
- If you are pleading guilty: references, a traffic offender program certificate, employment evidence and any medical or counselling reports, with copies.
- If you are applying for a work licence: your application and affidavits, and evidence they have been served.
Getting there
Arrive at least 30 minutes before the listed time. Larger courthouses have security screening. If your licence is suspended or you have been disqualified, do not drive yourself to court. For remote courts that sit in a community hall, school or justice centre, check the exact location the day before.
At the courthouse
Check the law list near the entrance or registry to find your courtroom, and tell your lawyer when you arrive. Stand when the Magistrate enters and leaves, and address the Magistrate as Your Honour.
Metropolitan, regional and remote courts
Brisbane and south-east Queensland courts, such as Brisbane, Holland Park, Pine Rivers, Richlands, Wynnum, Sandgate, Redcliffe, Cleveland, Beenleigh, Ipswich, Southport, Coolangatta, Caboolture, Maroochydore, Caloundra and Noosa, usually sit on weekdays.
Regional centres such as Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Gympie, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and Mount Isa have regular sittings.
Remote and circuit courts, including Torres Strait and Cape York communities and many western towns, sit on circuit. An adjournment at a circuit court may mean waiting for the next circuit, which is worth considering when planning your preparation.
Interstate drivers
If you live outside Queensland, your matter is still dealt with at the Queensland Magistrates Court named on your Notice to Appear. A lawyer can often appear for you at early mentions, but you may need to attend on the sentence date. A Queensland work licence is only available to eligible holders of a Queensland licence.
If you cannot attend
If you are sick or have another serious reason for not attending, tell your lawyer or the registry before the listed time and be ready to provide evidence. If you do not attend, the court may deal with the matter in your absence or issue a warrant.

How do I find out which courtroom I am in?
Check the law list for your court on the Queensland Courts website, or the list displayed at the courthouse on the day.
Can I call the court for advice?
No. Court registries can help with procedure and documents but cannot give legal advice. Only justice-related enquiries are handled by courthouse phones.
My court only sits on some days. What does that mean?
Your matter is listed on a sitting day. If it is adjourned, the next date may be some weeks away, depending on the court's calendar.
