How NSW Local Courts work for traffic matters

• Which court: your Court Attendance Notice names the Local Court and the date and time. It is usually the court nearest to where the offence is alleged to have happened.
• Sitting days: many regional courts sit only on certain days each week or month, and some courthouses are closed and refer to a nearby court. Your matter will be listed on a sitting day.
• Audio visual link (AVL): many courts have AVL facilities. Whether you can appear by AVL or by a lawyer without attending depends on the court and the stage of your matter.
• Registry hours: the registry is the office that handles documents and enquiries. Hours often differ from court sitting hours.

Metropolitan, regional and circuit courts

Sydney and metropolitan courts, such as the Downing Centre, Central, Parramatta, Burwood, Bankstown, Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool and Sutherland, usually sit on weekdays and have large traffic lists.

Regional centres, such as Newcastle, Wollongong, Gosford, Wyong, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Tamworth, Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Wagga Wagga and Albury, have frequent sittings, though not on every weekday.

Circuit and smaller courts sit on particular days each week or month, as shown in the directory. Some are closed and refer matters to a nearby court. If your court sits infrequently, an adjournment may mean a wait of several weeks for the next sitting, which is worth considering when planning your preparation.

Interstate and Queensland drivers

If you live outside NSW, your matter is still dealt with at the NSW Local Court named on your Court Attendance Notice. In many cases a lawyer can appear for you at early mentions, but you may need to attend on the sentence date. Tell us early if travel is a problem so that we can raise it with the court.
